A walk on a concrete giant: The Solina Dam
Before you head towards modern amusement parks, it’s worth starting with the place that gave rise to local tourism. The Solina water dam is the absolute foundation of every trip. It is the highest dam in Poland, rising to a height of almost 82 meters and spanning 664 meters in length.
For adults, it’s an impressive feat of engineering, but how do children perceive it? For them, it is primarily a gigantic, wide promenade from which you can look into the abyss on one side and at a huge expanse of water on the other.
- A sense of scale: Children love big numbers. The awareness that there are 2 million tons of concrete under their feet, and the dam holds back 500 million cubic meters of water, sparks the imagination.

When going to Solina with children, you must get out on the water. Cruise ships of the famous “White Fleet” depart regularly from the vicinity of the dam and the marina in Polańczyk. This is an excellent form of relaxation after an intense walk.
A standard cruise usually lasts from 45 to 60 minutes. This is an optimal time – long enough to enjoy the views of the Bieszczady hills dropping straight into the water, and short enough so that small children won’t get bored. Many ships play interesting stories over the loudspeakers about the villages flooded years ago to form the bottom of the lake. However, the biggest attraction for toddlers is the mere fact of being on a real, large ship.
